[My gut feeling is that the Feds are interfering with our business as they try to shut down alternative, survival businesses.] We were approached in January, 1998, by the importer for the Family Grain Mill and Flaker Mill to try their machine and consider adding it to our line. They told us it had a Bosch motorized base (which got our attention) as well as a hand-operated base. We're pretty sure the day is not too far off when electricity will either be sporadically delivered, or not available, so we like the idea of being able to do things, like grinding grains, by hand. So, we ordered a motorized base, a hand base, aflour grinder attachment and a flaker mill attachment. Frankly, we were skeptical that its hand-grinding would be easy. Grinding grains takes work. Boy, were we wrong! But more on that in a minute. The Family Grain Mill unit(s) arrived January 29, (1998). We were immediately impressed with the fit and finish of the grinder and flaker and respective bases. They're made in Germany and it shows. The Family Grain Mill (or flour mill), et al., are housed in white, high-impact plastic housings. Sleek. It looks aerodynamic! But we're utilitarian by nature and we couldn't wait to find out how it worked. The 10" chromed handle is about 3 inches shorter than some other hand grinders, so I didn't think it would be "grinding heaven" . But, it has conical, hardened steel burrs (larger than, but like, the Back to Basics' burrs), and that must be why ... but I'm getting ahead of myself. The burrs are 'infinitely' adjustable. You can adjust them just to bruise the grain or grind it into a fine flour. And, it finely grinds in only one pass.
What's really neat is the base/attachment arrangement: The laminated wood hand mill base easily clamps onto a table or countertop. (It'll clamp onto a 2 1/8 inch thick surface.) The motorized mill base sits on 4 non-slip rubber feet. Both bases have compatible locking mechanisms so that the grinder or flaker or grater/slicer or meat grinder attachments move easily from one to the other. What's also nice is that both bases are tall enough to place a large bowl under the attachments to gather the flour, or whatever else you're grinding, slicing, juicing.... The importer claims that the motorized grinder is one of the quietest on the market. While I've never personally heard the Whisper Mill (whose maker claims the same thing), the Family Grain Mill is definitely quiet compared to our all-purpose, do-everything, Kitchen Champ! We were impressed with the lower-than-normal noise level. Ah, but the grain grinding! We put a cup of hard, red organic wheat in the enormous hopper (It's almost a half gallon in size and will hold about 3 lbs of wheat! The largest we've seen on any unit.), tightened the grinding adjustment as tightly as we could, and easily, (compared to our previous experience) ground the finest organic whole wheat flour that a burr grinder can grind. Phyllis got out a bag of store-bought flour to compare. No, our organic whole wheat flour wasn't quite as fine, but it was very impressive and makes excellent bread. The Family Grain Mill has been in the American market for 20+ years. It's backed with a lifetime limited warranty. The importer tells me the hand base, mill and flaker are guaranteed for life, barring abuse. They certainly appear to be built that well. It's nice to be able to buy the unit in stages, as money allows: Start with the Family Grain Mill hand base and grain mill, then add the flaker mill, the meat grinder, and/or the grater/slicer later. If you want to spoil yourself, get the motorized grain mill base. I really believe you'll like this flour mill and its versatility.
